The psychoacoustic series had moved through the peripheral nervous system (СИНЬ, cochlea) and the central nervous system (БИЕНИЕ, auditory cortex) — both processing music through the auditory pathway at cortical speed. The third tier is subcortical: the amygdala, which receives auditory input from the inferior colliculus faster than the cortex can assess it — approximately 12 milliseconds ahead of conscious perception. This is Joseph LeDoux's low road: the brainstem pathway that generates fear and fight-or-flight before the cortex has finished identifying the source. Infrasound — frequencies below 20Hz — activates this pathway without any recognizable musical content. Vic Tandy and T.R. Lawrence documented this in 1998: an 18.98Hz standing wave in a reportedly haunted laboratory was causing researchers to feel watched, to have peripheral visual disturbances, to experience dread. The haunting was a faulty industrial fan. ИСТЕРИКА uses this directly: the 18Hz infrasound is present from bar one, activating the amygdala before the pipe organ enters. The Witch arrived as the right character because its hysteria is structurally naive: each potion thrown is an appropriate response to the current threat state. The witch heals when hurt, attacks when approached, escalates when escalation is coded as warranted. The cumulative effect is hysteria. No single response caused it.
TITLE MEANING
Russian истерика (istérika) derives from Greek ὑστέρα (hystéra, uterus) via French and German — the ancient misdiagnosis of hysterical episodes as uterine pathology. The modern Russian word retains none of this etymology and means simply: an acute hysterical episode, the sudden loss of emotional and motor regulation, the moment the accumulated tension exceeds the body's capacity to contain it. Истерика is distinguished from истерия (the chronic condition) by its acuteness: the episode, not the diagnosis. Laughter and tears simultaneously. Screaming without intention. The body overtaking the mind not through choice but through accumulated load. The witch's combat loop is an истерика in this exact sense: not a strategic failure but the moment accumulated appropriate responses exceed the system's regulatory capacity. The track is named for the episode — something that begins, escalates, peaks, and collapses into exhausted silence. Not the chronic state. The event.
ANS PRINCIPLE
The autonomic nervous system principle is the third and deepest tier of the psychoacoustic series. СИНЬ operated on the cochlea — peripheral, the ear producing a phantom frequency through mechanical nonlinearity. БИЕНИЕ operated on the auditory cortex — central, the brain constructing a phantom world from two-channel input. ИСТЕРИКА operates on the amygdala and the ANS — subcortical, pre-conscious, involuntary. The processing time matters: cochlear response ~1ms, cortical processing ~100-150ms, amygdala via low road ~12ms faster than cortex. The amygdala responds to threat-frequency sounds before the cortex can assess whether the threat is real. The acoustic startle reflex is the most primitive expression of this: the body has contracted, the heart rate has spiked, and the cortisol has begun before the conscious mind knows a loud sound occurred. The series has moved progressively earlier in the temporal chain of auditory processing: СИНЬ (cochlea, 1ms), БИЕНИЕ (auditory cortex, 100ms), ИСТЕРИКА (amygdala low road, faster than cortex by ~12ms). Each track reached a level the previous could not. The composer's contribution has decreased across the trilogy: СИНЬ provided two source frequencies and the ear made the third. БИЕНИЕ provided two stereo channels and the brain made the world. ИСТЕРИКА provides 18Hz and the listener's own nervous system provides the dread. The pipe organ connects the track to the series' cultural instrument tradition while inverting the tradition's emotional register: the organ is the instrument of sacred architecture, formal structure, controlled power — everything that precedes its collapse in this track. The crystalline 7-9kHz appears at peak for the first time in the series as breakage rather than emergence: every previous track built toward the crystalline as structural arrival; ИСТЕРИКА forces it to fracture under accumulated pressure. The naive emotion catalogue gains naive escalation — the accumulated reasonable responses that generate an unreasonable whole. This is the Hidden Theme Principle at its darkest: the hysteria was not in any single potion throw. It emerged from the relationship between throws, from the accumulation, just as the composite melody in НАИТИЕ emerged from the relationship between Gamelan parts. The emergent property of appropriate individual responses is an inappropriate whole. The witch never composed the hysteria. It was composed into the space between its correct behaviors.
